Exercise in pregnancy - what is recommended?
What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is diagnosed when your blood pressure readings are consistently above 140/90 mmHg.
Why is it important?
Hypertension is one of the most common health conditions worldwide. Left untreated, it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other serious complications.
How big is the problem?
- In Ireland, recent studies show that 43% of adults over 50 live with hypertension.
- Almost half (47%) of those diagnosed still don’t have their blood pressure at recommended levels.
- Worryingly, 36% of people who didn’t know they had hypertension recorded readings above 140/90.
- Over half (52%) of adults over 50 in the study (TILDA) were already prescribed blood pressure medication.
These numbers highlight just how common – and often under-recognised – high blood pressure really is.
What can be done?
The good news is that early detection and lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce your risk of complications. One of the most effective strategies is exercise.
Unfortunately, many people aren’t sure what type of exercise is best, how much they need, or how to start safely. This often leads to inactivity, leaving medication as the only option. While medicines are sometimes essential, relying on them alone means missing out on the long-term benefits of lifestyle changes.
